That’s where Joshua Burns, CEO of Coast 2 Coast Entrepreneur Consulting, comes in. As an entrepreneur consultant, Burns has helped business people across the United States – from coast to coast – to create businesses or to scale them. He has worked with entrepreneurs who have an embryonic business idea with no solid plan, just an idea, to create successful companies with defined metrics and goals in place. He has also helped established owners grow their business, sometimes beyond what they originally thought possible.
Burns also understands the need for businesses to weather storms. He recently experienced a life-changing event when he was diagnosed with Covid and had severe symptoms and side effects. The virus had dire consequences for his business and forced him to rethink how he works going forward. “When Covid hit, all of my businesses got shut down,” he says. “Covid hit me hard. I was hospitalized for six weeks, hooked up to machines and respirators. I was in the ICU and almost died. The doctor said had I not come to the hospital that day I probably wouldn’t have made it. The doctors called my mom to come and say goodbye to me. I had to dig down deep. I couldn’t move, but I couldn’t give up either. I had to fight and I did.”
Covid has had a major impact on his long-term health. His lungs and some other organs will never function at the capacity they used to before Covid, but that has not deterred him. He’s more determined to succeed and continue adding value to people’s lives. “I promised myself that if I could conquer it, which I knew I would, that I would never take another day for granted,” he says. “I promised that I would be a different man – a pure example of determination, persistence and success and let my light shine far and wide to influence others to do the same. I will be the example. Since then I’ve lost over 100 pounds, reversing my diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. I’ve helped many individuals become more successful. I’ve become more successful myself and now the sky’s the limit.”
One Size Does Not Fit All
His unique approach is what sets him apart. He does not believe in cookie-cutter packages, where entrepreneurs get a one-size-fits-all programme to build their business. He is dedicated to working with clients individually, taking their specific and unique needs and challenges into account.
“I have an unorthodox way in my approach to entrepreneurship,” he says. “Entrepreneurship is about thinking outside the box, trying new things, and putting things into play. I found that my technique and style is different to other consultants. My process is 100 percent customized to every individual depending on what their specific goals are. I’ve helped thousands of individuals get businesses off the ground, across industries, this way.”
Entrepreneurship is in Burns’ DNA. His father ran his own business and Burns grew up watching and learning from him. His grandfather was also a successful business owner.
Inspired by the men in his life as a teenager, he created his own ways to generate money. “I was always doing a car wash in the middle of the street, mowing lawns, walking dogs, taking paper routes, babysitting, doing lawn care, or taking out the garbage,” he recalls. This helped entrench an entrepreneurial spirit within himself, and from an early age, he understood the dynamics and needs of creating and scaling a business. “I understood the concepts of profits, scaling, and creating employees. I quickly caught on that if I had three lawns, I could only do one at a time. But if I had a friend do one of them and give them a portion of the money, I could keep the proceeds and make a profit.” This foundation in entrepreneurship is the basis on which he has grown his success.
Passion Is The Key to Success
Burns believes the true definition of success is doing what makes you happy. So happy that it doesn’t feel like you are working. “Life is waking up without an alarm clock because you’re so passionate about the journey that awaits for today,” he says. “Success comes from fulfilling your passion day in and day out. It comes from knowledge, teamwork, your work ethic, planning, having a strategy, and leadership skills, and, of course, creating opportunities for others.” Personal success for him is achieved by partnering with entrepreneurs to reach their business goals. That’s what gets him out of bed every morning (without an alarm clock!).
When asked what advice he would give a young aspiring entrepreneur, he responds quickly and with a sparkle in his voice. “If you ever wanted to do it, now is the time,” he urges. “This is the decade of the entrepreneur. It is easier to become a millionaire now than at any other time in history. There are so many resources, examples and individuals you have access to, at your fingertips. They can guide you in the right direction to become an entrepreneur.”
